With its pristine beaches, historical stone towns and delightful gastronomic offer, it is tempting not to venture too far from the waterfront on a holiday on Hvar, but for those with a little more energy and sense of adventure, the rewards are plentiful.
While there is much to admire and enjoy in the main resort towns of Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska, the real beauty of the island for many is in the hidden bays and coves dotted around Hvar. There are few better ways to explore them close up than by sea kayak.
Hvar Adventure Sea Kayak Tours
The island's leading activity specialist, Hvar Adventure, has a range of kayak tours on offer. Operating out of Hvar Town, the hidden coves and pine forests of the nearby Pakleni Islands are a natural choice for a day's kayaking.
A one-day kayaking tour departs at 10am from Hvar Town and heads across the harbour to the Pakleni Islands, heading through the narrow straits into a group of islands known for their beauty, seclusion and numerous small pebble beaches. Lunch in a restaurant on the beach is included. Tourists wanting to experience Hvar's spectacular sunsets from a kayak can take advantage of the Sea Kayaking Sunset Tour, departing at 4pm.
7 Day Sea Kayaking Tour of Hvar
Tourists interested in investigating beyond the environs of the main town may be interested in an all-inclusive package which explores the northern and southern coastline, as well as the Pakleni.
The tour starts with a visit to the Pakleni Islands, with overnight tented accommodation on the small island of St. Klement. Kayaking along the north coast of St. Klement, the tour returns to Hvar Town the following day, before heading off to take in the bays on the north coast of Hvar the following morning, ending up at the Jagodna campsite.
The following day sees a return to Hvar Town and on to discover the southern coast, with the final destination the pretty village of Sveta Nedelja, home of the famous Plenkovic winery. Putting down the paddles, there is an option to hike to the peak of the island, where one can enjoy a sublime panoramic view of the Adriatic and beyond, or to engage in somerock climbing. The tour concludes with a leisurely paddle back to Hvar via various bays en route.
Kayaking is one of a number of water-based activities on Hvar, while there are plenty ofthings to do away from the water.
